1. You went to Haiti earlier in the year to help build a wing onto a
orphanage, how was that experience and how did you get involved with
that? If someone wanted to make that leap and go help out what advice
would you have for them?

THE TRIP TO HAITI COULD NOT HAVE BEEN ANY BETTER, THE PEOPLE WERE SO KIND HEARTED AND I FEEL I LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT THE CULTURE AND PEOPLE.
I WAS JUST TIRED OF DOING THE SAME OLD ROUTINE AND IN CONVERSATIONS WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE LEARNED THAT I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT WAS TIRED OF APATHY.
MY FRIEND SARAH AND I GOT IN CONTACT WITH SEVERAL PEOPLE IN HAITI AND ASKED A LOT OF QUESTIONS AND EVENTUALLY REALIZED THAT WE WANTED TO HELP AS MUCH WITH THE PEOPLE OF HAITI AS WE COULD. WE DIDN’T GO WITH AN ORGANIZATION, WE JUST MADE OUR OWN I GUESS.
IT WENT SO WELL WE ARE GOING TO TAKE A GROUP OF PEOPLE TO CALCUTTA, INDIA IN JANUARY TO WORK WITH VICTIMS OF SEX SLAVERY. IT HAS BEEN SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN ON MY HEART FOR SOME TIME, AND I WANT TO HELP AS MUCH AS I CAN TO PUT AN END TO IT.
IF SOMEONE WANTED TO HELP THEY NEED TO JUMP RIGHT INTO IT. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, THEY ARE SO EASY TO FIND BECAUSE THEY NEED YOUR HELP!
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, SALVATION ARMY, AND WORLD VISION ALWAYS NEED VOLUNTEERS. AMERICA IS SO FAST TO THROW MONEY AT PROBLEMS, WE THINK THAT IF WE JUST HAND SOMEONE MONEY THAT WE HAVE DONE OUR PART. BUT PEOPLE WANT YOUR TIME. OUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE.
THERE ARE A BUNCH OF MOVIES THAT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM SUCH AS BORN INTO BROTHELS AND ANOTHER ONE CALLED INVISIBLE CHILDREN. GREAT EDUCATIONAL FILMS.
SOME WEBSITES TO CHECK OUT ARE MERCYSHIPS.ORG AND LOWERCASEPEOPLE.COM

2. What is an issue that you feel strongly about?
Currently I am really trying to fight the sex slavery that is going on with young young girls in India. One report I read is that the girls are as young as 6 years old being sold into prostitution. It just makes me nauseous to think that people can hurt little girls like this.

3. If you could change one thing about the World right now, what would
it be and why?
I wish that everyone in the world could see every dilemma and conflict from both point of views, I know that is impossible but there would not be as many wars or divorces for sure.

4. What inspires you each day?
Life. Cold weather. Music. Passion. The future.

5. What is one big defining moment in your life that you think helped
make you who you are today?

Working in the Ukraine for two months when I was 17 years old.
You learn who you are when you are forced to be selfless.

6. If someone were to ask you the definition of living your life to
the fullest, what would you tell them?

Following every dream you encounter. Even if you fail you were not scared to try and that’s what matters. Take risks. Pursue challenges head on. Sometimes following your dreams can be a lonely path. Honestly. Because no one understands you, or what your trying to attempt because they can not visualize it. Look at Tolstoy or Van Gogh, they lead inexplicable lives, where no one knew who they really were or what they were really capable of until their lives were over. But it is those brave souls that pave the way for the rest of us to explore the world and ourselves, as we know it.

7. Being in a band, you have a chance to touch a lot of people, do you
Have any messages you'd like to communicate to your fans?

1. This life is not about you. It is all about helping other people; it is about making a difference. “Do not desire a place on this earth when you die, but in the hearts of men” (-Rumi)
2. Know thyself, as Aristotle said. Turn off the computer and the TV and sit and think.
Solitude is the furnace of transformation.
3. Seek truth. Seek and you will find.

8. How does it feel that you are changing people lives day in and day out?
I wish that were true,

9. What's the best advice you've ever received? What advice does you?
have for someone that may be reading this?

Two pieces of advice would be to explore this world (travel!) it is truly a beautiful world we live in. & Secondly READ!

10. What doors did God open for you to get to where you are today?
All of them. My dad moved to Florida. I met a guy named shawn, who introduced me to deon, deon to joey, met nate through shows… etc. It is just amazing that life seems to work out in your favor when you attempt your dreams.

11. What is it like being Christian in the music scene now? Do you
Feel like people are hesitant to check out your music because they
Know you're Christian?

There is a lot of opportunity to share my faith through my actions and words. I think some people don’t listen to us because we are Christian but honestly that is really really closed-minded.

12. What does Tooth & Nail do for them that you think another label?
Couldn’t offer?
Friendship and passion are the two elements that keep us holding on.

13. Where did the names Anberlin and Anchor & Braille both come from?
Anberlin is actually the name I wanted to give to my daughter someday. But now I don’t think she would appreciate it that much. With A&B I just wanted a band name that you could almost feel. The name conjures up so much imagery, so that was the basic inspiration.
14. How is the new album coming along? Anberlin and Anchor & Braille.
Where are you pulling inspiration?
Anberlins record is finally done! Today! So that is a big accomplishment. I can’t wait to hear the whole record. I think it is going to be the best one yet!
A&B records in December with producer Aaron Marsh, so I can’t wait to hear how that is going to come together.
Inspiration is life itself. It is the greatest teacher, and I think people can get more out of a song if they can relate to it.

15. What is your music writing process? How do you go about writing a song?
With anberlin Joey Milligan writes the majority of the music and I just add in the lyrics and melody lines. With A&B I write the melody lines and lyrics at the same time as I write the music. Both are amazing process that I just feel blessed to have the understanding.

16. What do you hope to accomplish with your music? What do you want to portray?
I want to make people smile. I would love to be the soundtrack to someone’s life. Or at least one of the songs on the soundtrack to their lives. With this new anberlin album I really want to point out the hope in the dark times of life. That there is help in hopeless times.

17. How do you keep yourself on track spiritually day in and day out?
Especially with being on tour.
By getting away by myself and reading/seeking. It’s hard I am not going to lie. But it is a must.

18. You guys play Cornerstone every year, is there a different
Atmosphere there than any other show?
For sure. Cornerstone is good and bad. Good because I think we get to play in front of thousands of people that would otherwise never come to one of our shows. Bad because it feels impersonal being so far away from the fans.

19. What makes you guys different from other bands out there?
I don’t know. Hopefully its because we really have a positive outlook on life and our music. We want to treat each fan with respect and put on the best live show they have ever seen.

20. On your blog you stated that you were writing a book called the
Orphaned Anything’s, can you tell us about that?
Yes I am finally done with the book. After almost 2 years. It is a story about a young man growing up in Seattle Washington ( a special place in my heart) and fighting mediocrity, and finally realizing that there is more to living than being alive. I am sending it out to publishers but that industry is a whole new monster.

21. If you were doing anything else with your life, what would you be
doing and why?
I think I would like to be a doctor. Married with some little kids running around my feet. But that is a different life. One that I don’t see coming about for some time.

22. If the band was going to come to an end, what would be the best
experience you've had with Anberlin?
Traveling with my best friends to play art that I helped create to an audience that actually cared.
